Meals on Wheels and More began in 1972 as an Austin-based, grassroots organization staffed with eight volunteers. Together, they cooked and delivered meals to 29 homebound seniors three times a week.

Within five years, the organization, then called United Action for the Elderly, Inc., began receiving grants and expanded to serve an average of 330 people six times a week. Ten years after that, 14 cooking sites had been established, and an average of 175,000 meals was being prepared each year.

In 1994, the organization changed its name to Meals on Wheels and More. By this time, additional programs such as Handy Wheels and Groceries to Go – had been incorporated, and the meal-delivery program was serving over 1,000 people.

Today, Meals on Wheels and More provides service to nearly 5,000 persons in need with the help of more than 7,000 volunteers offering programs designed to keep our clients healthy and living independently with dignity.

*Meals on Wheels and More has received Charity Navigator’s top honor - a 4-Star rating - for fiscal management and accountability!

This award marks the 8th year in a row that Meals on Wheels and More has received this organization’s top honor, putting MOWAM in an elite category of nonprofits across the country. Only 1% of all charities evaluated by Charity Navigator have received eight consecutive 4-star ratings.

*Meals on Wheels and More was named one of Austin’s Top 100 Workplace’s by the Austin American Statesman in 2010 and 2012 based on employee satisfaction!

Meals on Wheels-Volunteers deliver meals to homebound clients

Handy Wheels-Volunteers help clients with minor home repairs that are safety-related.

H.O.P.E.-Volunteers deliver an extra bag of groceries once a month

Groceries to Go-Volunteers grocery shop twice a month for clients

Mike's Place-Volunteers help clients with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia

P.A.L.S.-Volunteers transport clients’ pets for vet visits or deliver pet food monthly.

*Volunteer orientation for Meal Delivery Program is every Thursday 12:15p.m. at our central kitchen 3227 E. 5th St. 78702.

*And More Programs volunteer orientation is scheduled individually through the program coordinator.
