We help children prosper despite their life challenges and circumstances.

When children lose a parent to prison, they often lose their home and their stability, and their future is tenuous at best. These kids are “doing time” while their parents are and they face significant risk factors that can make it difficult for them to succeed.

The Seedling Foundation supports children challenged by parental incarceration with innovative, research driven, school-based mentoring. We believe in the promise of every child: the promise of an education, the promise of a future, and the promise of all they can contribute to society.

 The Foundation launched the Seedling’s Promise Mentorship Program in February 2006 at the request of a group of school principals who were concerned about the growing numbers of children affected by the incarceration of one or both of their parents. The Seedling Foundation recruits volunteers from the community, matches them with eligible children, and offers ongoing support to both children and mentors. Our mentors provide stable, long-term relationships for the students and help them develop and maintain positive attitudes towards school. Since our founding, we have served more than 1500 children.

Seedling’s Promise has gained national attention and awards for our successful approach to matching children and mentors in a large urban school district. In 2012, 80% of our mentors returned for an additional year of mentoring and our average mentoring relationship lasts for three years. Mentors, teachers, caregivers, and the students themselves report positive outcomes from participation in Seedling’s Promise.

Supported, nurtured, and encouraged, the children of Seedling’s Promise can build the resilience necessary to overcome their circumstances and fulfill the promise of their young lives.

For over a decade, a group of committed citizens, public corporations, and small businesses have worked collaboratively with over 30 schools to build long-term, sustainable partnerships. Working with our mentors and partners, the Seedling Foundation has invested millions of dollars and thousands of hours to help change the landscape of education in Austin Public Schools.
