Austin Bat Cave is a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for kids that connects a diverse population of young writers and learners with a vibrant community of adult volunteers in Austin. 

Since that first series of workshops in 2007, Austin Bat Cave has published seven anthologies of student writing and has led workshops on everything from oral storytelling and songwriting to flash fiction and hip-hop poetry. Throughout the years, the organization has worked hard to fill the gaps in the public education system and give students an opportunity to give voice to their thoughts and ideas while strengthening their writing skills across all subjects at the same time.

Over the years, our organization has continued to expand, partnering with many other nonprofit organizations throughout the city including the Texas Book Festival, Breakthrough, Foundation Communities, Austin Library Foundation, and Urban Roots.

When you support Austin Bat Cave, you impact the education of hundreds of students in the greater Austin community. Contributions are tax-deductible and help ABC fulfill its mission: bringing local artists and teachers together to offer free after-school tutoring, in-school support, and creative-writing workshops for students from every community in Austin. All of our programming is free for all students, parents, and teachers. We are grateful for contributions of all sizes and variety, including financial donations, gifts in-kind, and creative capital.

Volunteer 

If you would like to volunteer for the Austin Bat Cave, please take a moment to fill out our volunteer form. This will ensure that you receive updates about programs for which we need volunteers, and you’ll also get the inside scoop on super-fun volunteer get-togethers!

We consistently need volunteers for in-school programs (both continuous and one-time), as well as our own weekend, one-time, and summer workshops. We frequently need volunteers for fundraising events, too. If you want to help, but not in the classroom, we still want you to be involved! There is a wide variety of ways you can contribute, from online tutoring, to administrative assistance, to grant writing, and more. If you have expertise in a field that involves writing, and some background working with young people, you might be a fit to teach an evening or weekend workshop. The topics range from SAT-prep to hip-hop poetry to science writing. Whatever your area of interest, our staff will work with you to perfect your lesson plan and execute your workshop.
