Local Teams, Mpacting Dreams
Operation Turkey provides Thanksgiving meals, clothing and toiletries to the homeless and less fortunate in Austin and 29 cities nationwide. Each Thanksgiving, Operation Turkey effectively organizes local teams of volunteers - families, friends, and businesses - to cook, prepare, pack, and deliver thousands of hot meals.
It started in 2000 when Richard Bagdonas had just finished his own Thanksgiving dinner with friends. Richard drove downtown to 6th Street his way home and handed out a plate of food to a homeless man in a wheelchair. The homeless guy next to him said 'thank you' and helped feed the meal to the man. Afterwards, Richard knew he wanted to impact the homeless. This grass-roots program started with just one meal and has grown to a nationwide presence. Community leaders have accepted the challenge to feed people in their respective cities.
Simply bring a plate of leftovers to someone in your community on Thanksgiving. Feed two people next year. Grow your program each year until you have reached your maxiumum.
Volunteer
Operation Turkey relies on generous volunteers joining together at Thanksgiving to help others. It's a simple way of giving back to the town we love, an effort that makes a real difference, and a tremendously rewarding way to share the spirit of Thanksgiving.
