Anthropos Arts is a nonprofit organization that works in East Austin to bring top professional musician-mentors into low-income schools, offering free music lessons, workshops, and performance opportunities to at-risk middle and high school students. The 2013–2014 school year marks our fifteenth year, with well over 10,000 lessons, and more than $1 million in services provided at $0 cost to students, families, or schools.
The diverse mentor-musicians who teach the Anthropos programs are some of Austin’s best performing musicians, doctoral candidates, and professors of music. They are also paid a fair wage for this work.
- We focus on solo performance and improvisation, which builds confidence and musical ability. Every student in our program performs at least one improvised solo in a public performance annually.
- Our teachers are also mentors, and can be some of the few reliable adult relationships our students have.
- Our music selections are diverse. Students learn music from their own cultures, but are also stretched to perform pieces from Jazz, Latin, Indian, Arabic, East and West African, Ska, Hip-Hop, Romanian Gypsy and other genres.
- In addition to an annual showcase of their work, our students perform in some of the seminal music events in the Austin community, including ACL Festival, SXSW, Pachanga Latin Music Festival, Lustre Pearl, Austin Music Hall, and others.
