We enrich the lives of adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities through the power of art, music, & community.

Our Story

In 2009, Tressie Seegers started an art and music camp for people with disabilities in Austin, TX after she observed a need in the disability community for life-enriching programs. In 2010, she turned the camp into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called The Austin Harmony Project whose mission is to enrich the lives of adults with developmental disabilities through art, music and community. Since then, Harmony has touched the lives of more than 150 adults with developmental disabilities and had more than 15,000 touch points with those they serve.

In 2011, Harmony received a seed money grant from A Glimmer of Hope Foundation that enabled Harmony increase capacity by moving into their current 4000 sq. ft. facility on W. Stassney in South Austin, TX. The Glimmer team and Berber family continue to partner with Harmony and offer participants free tuition every summer to Camp Glimmer. In 2014 they honored Harmony's founder, Tressie Seegers, with the Angel of The Year award.

Harmony conducts art and music enrichment sessions five days a week along with supported employment and job training through two social enterprises called Harmony Books, an online bookstore, and Harmony thrift and gift store.

To create social balance, Harmony stays connected to the community through regular art shows and music concerts where participants are given an opportunity to share their talents, sell their artwork, and be included in the community. Harmony also hosts a monthly dance party whose purpose is to give adults with disabilities a safe and secure place where they can dance, have fun and hang out with their friends on a Saturday night.

Harmony has made a difference for so many adults with developmental disabilities, their families and caretakers. For some participants, Harmony is their whole life. It's a happy place to go everyday and do cool art projects, sing fun songs, dance, and develop meaningful friendships.

Volunteer Opportunities at Harmony

Volunteers that work with Harmony clients must be college-aged or older and have a background check completed. The following is a list of activities that volunteers can help with.

  • Art Assistants
  • Music Assistants
  • Art Shows
  • Music Concerts
  • General Cleaning & Organizational Duties
  • Fundraising Events
  • Annual 4th of July Fundraiser in Luckenbach, TX
  • Annual Fall Carnival

Something that is always appreciated from volunteers is help sweeping, wiping tables, vacuuming, cleaning the front glass doors and organizing the art supplies and music equipment / stage area. These duties are important and help to keep the programs running smoothly. Volunteers who are willing to jump in and help out in these areas are very much appreciated!

During art and music shows, volunteers are needed to help with the preparation leading up to the events during the weeks before the show. Volunteers are needed to help serve food, greet guests as they arrive, help with the art that's sold and clean up afterwards. These events and concerts bring in a considerable amount of revenue that helps to keep the art and music programs going and are very important. We always welcome and appreciate extra help from volunteers.

If you would like to help Harmony out by becoming a volunteer, download the volunteer application below, fill it out and send it in or bring it in person.

Thank you for your willingness to help. We appreciate you!!!
