Rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured wildlife of Austin, TX, since 1977

Believing all life is precious, Wildlife Rescue rehabilitates and releases orphaned, sick, or injured wild animals and educates the public to coexist with wildlife.

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has been a proud Central Texas tradition since 1977. Wildlife Rescue started as a small group of concerned individuals from diverse backgrounds with a common interest in providing experienced care for wildlife.

From that small core of individuals, Wildlife Rescue has grown into a widespread network of professional rehabilitators and volunteers who assist the public through our Rescue Hotline (512)472-9453 and our Intake Center.

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. serves the citizens and wildlife of Central Texas by providing direct assistance to the public concerning questions, problems, and conflicts with native wild animals.  Wildlife Rescue, Inc. accomplishes that mission by:

1. Training volunteers to operate a telephone hotline in order to assist with wildlife inquiries from the public.

2. Supporting qualified rehabilitators to provide care to orphaned and injured wild animals until they can be returned to their native environment.

3. Providing educational programs designed to eliminate or mitigate conflicts between humans and wild animals.

You found a wild animal, what is the next step?

Many well-meaning people rescue an orphaned mammal or bird that does not need to be rescued.

DO NOT rescue a wild animal and keep (kidnap) it as a possible pet. State and federal laws protect nearly all wild mammals and birds. It is against the law to possess the animal or bird or the nests, feathers, or eggs of a bird without special permits.

In addition, dietary needs of each species are different and it is almost impossible to duplicate their needs in captivity without special training. Rehabilitators often receive irreparably damaged animals because the rescuer tried to keep it as a pet and did not know how to provide for it properly.

It is not true that mammals or birds will always reject their young once they have been handled by humans.

Nonetheless, the handling of wild babies should be avoided or kept to a minimum. Handling by humans can be stressful to the animal. Also, the human scent can sometimes attract predators seeking food.

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife in Central Texas. Wildlife Rescue takes in nearly 6,000 animals a year and receives no city, state, or federal funding. We rely on the donations of those who support our mission to coexist with wildlife.
